Community Benefits/
Safeguarding Hawaii’s cultural heritage and natural resources is a responsibility we do not take lightly. This philosophy helps us shape and support the communities where we live and work and is key to our success.
For the past 40+ years, we’ve helped lower the cost of living in Hawaii by facilitating the entry of retailers such as Costco, Target, Kmart, and Petco to the islands. We are currently working on affordable and market-rate housing projects. We additionally provide free events regularly for families and communities at our shopping centers on Oahu and the Big Island. And we offer volunteer days off and charitable contribution matching to all of our employees.
Since our formation, MacNaughton has donated millions of dollars to Hawaii nonprofits. Many of our team members serve on community boards and volunteer for organizations supporting and addressing significant issues like education, healthcare, sustainability, homelessness, job creation, and the arts.
The Foundation generally seeks areas where it might make a difference in our specific fields of interest, and will approach grantees that meet our mission. However, we are willing to accept letters of introduction from community organizations that are aligned with the Foundation’s fields of interest.

Further enhancing the environment where Hawaii residents live and work is the MacNaughton Foundation mission.
Established in 2016, the Foundation supports a broad range of charitable projects and organizations that address issues important to Hawaii residents, and contribute to a culturally-rich, healthy and safe environment. The Foundation also offers a charitable contribution matching program for MacNaughton employees.

Community Grants Awarded
US Vets
MacNaughton Foundation awarded its first grant in 2017 to U.S. Vets. This $1 million donation remains the largest gift in the nonprofit’s history. The initial $500,000 installment was used to improve and maintain the “Kidwell Recreational Area,” a safe space to support the rehabilitation of veterans residing in the U.S. VETS’ program. The second installment supported the development of their first Aftercare Program.
Ho‘ola Na Pua
In January 2018, the MacNaughton Foundation awarded a $200,000 grant to Ho‘ola Na Pua’s capital campaign and the development of Pearl Haven, Hawai‘i’s first licensed, residential, specialized treatment campus designed to meet the unique needs of sexually exploited children ages 11-18. Ho‘ola Na Pua is dedicated to the renewal of trafficked girls through health, education, advocacy, and reintegration programs.
Kupu Hawaii
Through a MacNaughton Foundation grant of $200,000, Kupu Hawaii was able to build a commercial kitchen and launch a farm-to-table culinary training program in their green jobs training center at Kewalo Basin. Once a former net shed site, Kupu Hawaii’s center now provides hands-on training in conservation, sustainability and environmental education to youth and young adults ages 16 to 24, a demographic with traditionally high unemployment.
The MacNaughton Foundation also awarded $50,000 to Kupu to produce 200 meals per day, 5 days per week, for two months, during the COVID pandemic, to the Boys ‘n Girls Club for distribution out of its Waianae clubhouse.
Girl Scouts of Hawaii STEM Center for Excellence
The STEM Center for Excellence at Camp Paumalū is a sprawling 135-acre living laboratory located on Oʻahu’s North Shore that provides year-round opportunities in cybersecurity, astronomy, robotics, computer coding, botany, chemistry, environmental stewardship and more. In 2019, MacNaughton Foundation awarded a $50,000 grant to the Girl Scouts organization to support the work at the STEM Center for Excellence.
Diamond Head Theater
The Diamond Head Theatre is a cultural institution which calls itself the Broadway of the Pacific. Opened in 1915, it is Hawaii's oldest performing arts center and is committed to expanding the cultural strength of our community by ensuring broad access not only to our productions, but to our education and outreach programs as well. In 2019, the MacNaughton Foundation gifted $50,000 to the theater in support of programs and education.
Hawai‘i Homeless Healthcare Hui
The Hawaii Homeless Healthcare Hui, or H4, was formed as a public/private partnership, supported by a variety of heath care and social service professionals and philanthropists, to create a new model for meeting the healthcare needs of Hawaii’s chronic homeless population. The MacNaughton Foundation committed $200,000 to help accelerate progress for the start-up and operational expenses of the H4 COVID-19 Medical Triage and Quarantine Center located at 524 Kaaahi Street to help support this vulnerable population during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hawaii Community Foundation
The MacNaughton Foundation has stepped up to aid Maui's wildfire relief efforts, donating $25,000 to the Hawaii Community Foundation. This contribution will provide critical support for those impacted by the devastating wildfires, including emergency relief, assistance for displaced families, and resources for rebuilding.
Hawaii Red Cross
The MacNaughton Foundation has pledged $25,000 to the Hawaii Red Cross in support of the ongoing Maui Wildfire Relief efforts. This donation will provide essential assistance to those affected by the devastating wildfires, offering relief supplies, shelter, and support services to displaced individuals and families.
