MacNaughton's Own Josh Stinson Pens Op-ed for Easterseals Hawaii
MIDWEEK
A Reliable Provider of Vital Services
By Josh Stinson, ex-officio and development chair with the board of directors with Easterseals Hawaii
With the pandemic still challenging our community, it’s easy to forget that the ongoing challenges we’ve faced for years haven’t gone away. They’re still with us and, in some cases, more formidable than ever. At Easterseals Hawaii, we know this is true from our work with keiki, youth and adults with disabilities or special needs. They were at a disadvantage before COVID-19, but as the virus spreads, they’ve been hit disproportionately hard.
In 2020, our team of 300 provided more than 200,000 hours of direct and customized services to 2,111 families statewide. For nearly 75 years, Easterseals Hawaii has been helping create a more inclusive community where people of all abilities are equally valued through integrated programs. This is very important, as some people are reluctant to talk about what the local nonprofit has meant to their family – fearful there’s a stigma attached to a loved one facing developmental delays, autism or special needs.
Disabilities often arrive unexpectedly and are recognized only when the need for support becomes apparent. At this point, many parents realize they have limited options of specialized care, and Easterseals Hawaii is the one they can count of for vital, often long-term assistance. Easterseals Hawaii was there for my son, who received early intervention services that helped him become the thriving 10-year-old he is today.
Easterseals Hawaii’s early intervention services help keiki up to age 3 reach developmental milestones. Our autism services focus on giving keiki skills they need to thrive. Our adult home and community-based services help adults lead independent, fulfilling lives.
Easterseals Hawaii receives federal and state funding, but also relies on grants and donations. Visit eastersealshawaii.org to learn more about what we do and how you can help.
