Regal Kapolei Commons 12 Opens This Weekend

Hawaii News Now

This morning we are getting an unprecedented look inside of the brand new theatres in Kapolei that are officially opening this weekend.

We start off by showing the seats and the expanse of the aisles; we talk to Ken Thewes, Chief Marketing Officer of Regal Entertainment Group about the fact that this is the top of the line luxury theatre setting in Hawaii.

Thewes also let us know that they had showings this past week of older movies, but it let the public get a feel for the new place. The difference: 100% of the ticket prices were donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Honolulu, Make-A-Wish Hawaii Foundation and the UH West O'ahu Creative Media Program. Thewes told us that they raised $75,000; giving $25,000 to each organization.

We also got a look at the full "Community Trailer" that will be seen before each movie (more on that in a moment); discussed the Dolby Atmos system and how the sound doesn't just come out of the speakers but it moves with what is seen on the screen, the oversized screen that is perfect for 4k video and more.

The "Community Trailer is about a 2 min piece that was put together by UH West O'ahu-Creative Media; it is a wonderful piece that while it is young and hip; it gives a sense of place of West O'ahu. From lifestyle to a little of the "old" and "new" together; to culture, places and more. Basically it's a multimedia snapshot of the community that this new theatre belongs to; and is brilliant from a cultural, marketing and community standpoint. Congratulations to the partnership between Regal and UH West O'ahu and the team that made it happen. We talked to students Julian Silveria, Mahealani Kahala and Melissa Garabiles and UH West O'ahu Faculty Advisor Gary Shimokawa.

Finally we got a showing of the food that will be featured as Regal wants to make sure that something local is ready for a local community; and partnering with local businesses to make it happen.
